  • @billurbanski - Fly in 11/10. Fly out 11/14.  Looking to carpool to/from LAX.
  • @kg - Me + 1 will be in SF, probably flying down, but if someone needs riders, that could work too [we both have cars with 200K+ miles=trying conserve miles].  We also have other friends camping/climbing in JT same wknd, will be with them part of the time, in case that's helpful for camping/overnight numbers?  Also have a car of friends (1-3) hoping to join from San Diego. - kg, yeah it would really help out if you had your own camping arrangements :) When would you be arriving though? If it's early enough it may not be an issue @rockgrrl
  • @benpope - Me + 1, driving from AZ.  Arriving during the day on Thursday (11/11)
  • @Jetforme - driving from San Jose

Campsite Info

Park Entrance Fee Options:

  • 7-Day Vehicle Permit $15
  • Joshua Tree National Park Annual Pass $30
  • Interagency Annual Pass: $80 this pass replaces the National Park Pass and Golden Eagle Passport. It provides access to Federal recreation sites, including National Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife, Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Reclamation, and U.S. Forest Service.

Campsite Fees:

Hidden Valley, Belle, Ryan, Jumbo Rocks and White Tank campgrounds are $10 a night. You pay using an envelope system once you've found a site.

Campsite Plan:

I'll be doing my plan from last year and getting sites on Tuesday as we were unable to get a group campsite and everything left is first come first served (the majority of the park is this way). I can't guarantee I'll be able to get a site for everyone but last year we were lucky and got 4 sites all in a row in Ryan Campground. If you don't need a campsite let me know because I'll be aiming for 4 sites again (6 people, 3 tents, 2 cars per site means that will cover 24 folks without any issues with rangers). Shuttling of extra cars to/from the Boyscout trailhead parking lot may need to be worked out.

Please bring cash for camping fees, sharing between everyone it should end up being pretty economical. I'll get the word out which site is base camp and other camp site numbers by Tuesday night via my Google voice "hotline" (my phone number set to give a special voicemail recording) and I will also leave a note on the back of the Hidden Valley Campground bulletin board. I'm pretty sure I've exchanged numbers with at least one person from each car coming out to Jtree if not, DM me the number you'll be calling from so I can add you to the group that will get the message. - @rockgrrl (updated 11/8/10)

Backup Camping Options:

  • There is BLM land near Joshua Tree
  • Hotels/Motels in Joshua Tree (the town)
  • Hotels/Motels in 29 Palms
  • If things are full and you don't want a hotel or BLM you can backpack on the boy scout trail, It's close and you only have to be one mile from the road to set up. I have done this when hidden valley and everything near that was completely full and it worked out well (quiet and peaceful). There is a backcountry parking lot near the entrance to get on the trail.

Routes

Gear

i.e. We will need 30 ropes, 50 biners, firewood, etc

  • @pwcarey - I can bring a 50m rope and cameras. I plan on doing more still and video than climbing this time.
  • @dmasten - will bring a rope, bunch of biners, and various and sundry webbing
  • @rockgrrl - rack, cameras, the old thick Jtree guidebook, BoulderCanyon snacks, Climb On! Product, Action Wipes, Coach's Oats samples and Clif Products. Thanks so much to our sponsors!
  • @tiffanymroyal - can try to fit in the rope in pack. biners, webbing, etc. i have the Falcon Guide to West Joshua Tree climbing (i think its that one). And Climb On to share. and Joshua Tree Salve as well. :)  - @rockgrrl I think we'll have the softest skin out in Jtree that weekend! haha :)
  • @theclimbergirl - at least one rope; single cams from yellow alien size to BD Camalot 4; draws; camera; video; the big ol inch deep JTree book and a smile.
  • @mtsquirrel - Interagency pass, as much rack as I can fit into a carryon (can I mooch off everyone's ropes?)
  • @patrickgensel - trad rack, singles up to #4 camalot, two sets of stoppers, lots o slings, 10 sport draws, webbing, 70m rope, Camera, video cam, Jtree book
  • @dloo - 60m rope, full set of draws.
  • @billurbanski - 60m rope,  full passive rack, few smaller cams.
  • @Blueskeyes207 - Do I really need to bring a rope? Full set of Draws - maybe stoppers. Depends on how motivated I am. Trad routes of JTree book + Camera and a bazillion gigs of memory so I can film everything.
  • @archweaver I am bringing the rope if I have the weight for it.
