Campsite Info

Park Entrance Fee Options:

  • 7-Day Vehicle Permit $15
  • Joshua Tree National Park Annual Pass $30
  • Interagency Annual Pass: $80 this pass replaces the National Park Pass and Golden Eagle Passport. It provides access to Federal recreation sites, including National Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife, Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Reclamation, and U.S. Forest Service.

Campsite Fees:

Hidden Valley, Belle, Ryan, Jumbo Rocks and White Tank campgrounds are $10 a night. You pay using an envelope system once you've found a site.

Campsite Plan:

@rockgrrl: I'll be doing my plan from last year and getting sites on Tuesday or Wednesday, aiming for sites next to each other at Ryan Campground. I will post campsite numbers on the Ryan campground bulletin board (notes are on the back of the boards).

Email me at my twitter name plus rockgrrl.com ( or send me a Twitter DM) to let me know your arrival day and how many cars/people you have.  I'll be aiming for a minimum of 4 sites again (6 people, 3 tents, 2 cars per site means that will cover 24 folks and 8 cars without any issues with rangers).

If you don't need a campsite let me know so I don't try to wrangle a site we don't need. If you are unconfirmed as of Monday you are of course still welcome to join us but you will not be included in campsite space / parking allocation.

Shuttling of extra cars to/from the Boyscout trailhead parking lot may need to be worked out.

Please bring cash for camping fees, sharing between everyone it should end up being pretty economical. I'll get the word out which site is base camp and other camp site numbers via a note on the back of the Ryan campground bulletin board.

Backup Camping Options:

  • There is BLM land near Joshua Tree
  • Hotels/Motels in Joshua Tree (the town)
  • Hotels/Motels in 29 Palms
  • If things are full and you don't want a hotel or to camp on BLM land you can backpack on the boy scout trail, It's close and you only have to be one mile from the road to set up. I have done this when Hidden Valley and everything near that was completely full and it worked out well (quiet and peaceful). There is a backcountry parking lot near the entrance to get on the trail.

Routes

If you've got some routes on your tick list, list your name and routes here

Gear

i.e. We will need 30 ropes, 50 biners, firewood (firewood provided by/paid for by Mountain Mama and ClimbOn!), etc

  • @rockgrrl - rack, cameras, the old thick Jtree guidebook, 60 Trad Climbs book, the newer Green guidebook by Randy Vogel.
  • @rockmaven56 - 1 rack, 2 ropes. Several guidebooks.
  • @dloo Rope, draws.   Everything for sport,  nothing for trad.
  • @mtsquirrel #7 tricam, pie
  • @sudarkoff - 70m rope
  • @monkeysmash - doubles of everything but the small stuff (am also lacking #4s), rope, etc.
  • @expectadventure - 2 ropes, full trad rack, 2 crash pads, firewood, several J-Tree climbing guides to share
  • @benpope - doubles in gear and ropes, couple of guides
  • @climbrunliftmom - Can bring 1 rope and draws for sure. Can probably bring another rope and a rack of doubles if needed.

Hey, when is everyone heading up there and leaving? Trying to figure out if I'll go W-M or W-Sun.

Unexpected visit from the grandparents is putting a kink in our plans. We'll now be out there for the day Thursday only. Better than nothing, right? I'll drop off firewood and try to catch up with the other midweek folks. Would love to jump on someone's rope, if possible. Otherwise, bouldering is always good times.

Better than nothing :) We'll have a bunch of ropes so I'm sure you can jump on a few!

Great! What would be the best way to track you all down Thursday? We'll be easy to spot -- green Subaru Impreza wagon with a Thule box on top. The red-headed 4-year-old and baby make us extra obvious. I'm still coming back from pregnancy-related injuries, so if anyone is playing on moderates (and not of the John Long 5.9 variety!), I'm in!
